PLS Classes Instructor Since 2006

Darlene is a retired K-12 educator and currently works as an instructional coach and a mentor for PLS Classes in addition to facilitating PLS courses. One of her greatest passions is spending time with her family—especially her little grandson. She also enjoys cycling, walking, kayaking, cross country skiing, gardening and reading.

Why did you want to become an educator?

From elementary through secondary school, I was fortunate to have dynamic teachers who inspired and encouraged me. In fact, they are the individuals who, besides my parents, have had the most profound impact on my life. When I was in high school, I became a tutor for elementary students. I knew then that I wanted to become a teacher. My tenth grade English teacher was the one who set me on the path to study—and become absolutely enthralled with—literature.

Why do you like teaching PLS Classes?

Teaching PLS Classes is both exciting and rewarding as I watch other professionals – beginning teachers and veterans – experience epiphanies about their own classrooms. Interaction and collaboration among the participants drive the courses. As we explore the course material together through engaging activities, the class climate is always positive and supportive as participants share their ideas and best practices and consult with other teachers on their respective grade levels or in their subject areas. PLS course activities and assignments are designed to be practical and easily implemented to meet professional needs. In many cases, participants can incorporate strategies into their current practice during the graduate course and receive feedback from the instructor or other participants.
