As students make the change to at-home classrooms, parents transition to work-from-home life and homeschooling — teachers are making an even bigger adjustment: finding ways to deliver instruction and connect with students outside of the classroom.

Luckily, technology provides plenty of ways for teachers to stay connected to students, whether it’s through Google Classroom, social media, or email. And one of the most powerful ways to connect with anyone is through video.

Benefits of sharing video for teachers:

Seeing a teacher’s smiling face creates an instant connection and has the potential to brighten any student’s day.
Communication is more effective because video can hold a student’s attention longer than a long email or written document.
Teachers have the opportunity to model activities or lessons to provide a picture of a successful outcome for students before they begin working.

You might be thinking, “Great idea, but I really would have no clue how to even begin.”

We’ve been looking at different video resources and Wistia, a video-software company located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is currently offering educators free video hosting or free access to Soapbox, their webcam and screen recorder tool. (At PLS we use Wistia all the time!)

Wistia’s founders made the announcement on Twitter on Monday, March 23, stating, “Making business more human is at the heart of all we do at Wistia. That means standing with you & providing help through the COVID-19 crisis. If you’re relying on video to serve the public good & need help with video hosting costs, we want to give you Wistia access for free.”

In addition to video hosting, Wistia also features:

  • A variety of embed and share options.
  • Customization tools to include chapters, links, annotations, and closed captions.
  • Fully-accessible video players to provide an inclusive experience for all people across all devices.

Plus it’s really intuitive and easy to use.

For more information on how you can utilize this free offer, email Wistia at using the subject line “COVID-19 Response.”

We hope you find this helpful. And if there is anything we can do to help support you in the coming weeks, do not hesitate to reach out!

In full disclosure, PLS Classes is not affiliated with Wista. We just happen to really like the platform and wanted to share it with you in hopes that it will be helpful for you and your teaching team.
