In support of the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s School Climate Improvement Process, PLS Classes proudly offers a new graduate course entitled Social-Emotional Learning: Essential to Student Success.

Focusing on the importance of supporting academics with social-emotional learning, participants will explore five key areas:

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-management
  • Responsible decision-making
  • Social awareness
  • Relationship skills

Social-Emotional Learning: Essential to Student Success will help educators develop in students empathy and compassion, integrity and self-control, courage and perseverance, humility and gratitude, teamwork and communication, and curiosity and inquisitiveness, which are all important character strengths.

According to research reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), school-wide Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programming supports achievement gains in students and contributes to post-graduation success.1

In addition, the skills taught in Social-Emotional Learning: Essential to Student Success are an integrated part of Pennsylvania Career Ready Skills (PA CRS), supporting the development of student competence. Designed to prepare students to meet the demands of the 21st century workforce, PA CRS are grouped into three domains:

  • Self-Awareness and Self-Management
  • Establishing and Maintaining Relationships
  • Social Problem Solving

The new PLS course is three credit hours and is now available for on-site registrations for the summer 2020 semester through Wilkes University and Mercyhurst University.

The online version of Social-Emotional Learning: Essential to Student Success is currently being developed and will open for registration through our accredited university partners soon, so please stay tuned for that announcement.
